Left Mouse Button Position Delta. Magnitude. On Land Acceleration. These are just a few (and I mean few) of the programming “brain tiles” that needed to be represented, visually, within our Brain system. Brains are Project Spark' s approach to visual programming and are essentially a series of code that gives tasks, functions, variations and properties to all in-game props. By assigning commands through the brain editor, the player is able to program the prop through a series of visually represented choices.
My task at hand was to create art for the 700+ tiles that could be combined to program…...pretty much anything! I worked closely with designers and programmers to brainstorm either an icon or symbol that would visually reinforce whatever that particular tile was capable of doing.
We, visually, wanted to keep everything simple and easy to read. There were going to be lines and lines of this visual code and we wanted to make each tile easily recognizable. Our main source of inspiration were paleolithic cave paintings, infographics and travel signage/pamphlets. We found the travel documents to be a really great source of inspiration as they had to explain important/safety information to a user through images.
